IMD issues yellow alert for Delhi, moderate to light rainfall likely

The IMD’s seven-day weather forecast for Delhi has predicted moderate to light rainfall till Friday and light spells of rainfall from the weekend.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi till Friday, a warning to “be aware”, even as its seven-day weather forecast predicted moderate to light rainfall till Friday and light spells of rainfall from the weekend.

The south and southeast districts of Delhi received light to moderate rainfall from 5.30 pm on Wednesday till 8.30 am on Thursday, the IMD revealed. A generally cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms is predicted on Thursday.

The 24-hour cumulative rainfall logged till 8.30 am Thursday was 19.1 mm at the Safdarjung station, 2.6 mm at Palam, 25.7 mm at Lodhi Road, 0.8 mm Ridge, 9 mm at Ayanagar, 1 mm at Delhi University, 10 mm at Pusa, 9.5 mm at Pitampura and 0.5 mm at SPS Mayur Vihar. No rainfall was observed at Narela and Najafgarh stations.

No traffic advisory related to waterlogging in the Delhi-NCR has been issued by the Delhi Traffic Police.

The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung station, representative of the city, was 33.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and the minimum temperature was 26.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, both a notch below normal. The relative humidity oscillated between 74 per cent and 100 per cent.

The maximum and minimum temperatures expected by the IMD on Thursday are 34 and 26 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Earlier, at 8.15 am, the regional weather forecast centre in Delhi said in a post on X, “Light to moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at entire Delhi and NCR…for the next two hours.”

According to the IMD officials, the monsoon trough at mean sea level passed through Bikaner, Sikar, Gwalior, Khajuraho, Daltonganj, Canning and then east-southeastwards to Northeast Bay of Bengal, as of 5.30 pm Wednesday.

Earlier, the IMD had said in its press release that scattered to fairly widespread rainfall was likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh during the next five days.

On Wednesday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had received 18 complaints of water logging and recorded 10 tree-falling instances.
