The Delhi Police have foiled an extortion bid and arrested a 32-year-old man who allegedly demanded Rs 40 lakh from his former employer using spoofed international WhatsApp numbers. The accused, identified as Ramzan Ali Hashmi, a resident of Chhatarpur, was arrested by the police on Friday.
The case came to light after Manoj Kumar Kashyap, a resident of Motia Khan in Paharganj, lodged a complaint on October 26, stating that he and his wife had been receiving threatening calls and messages since October 10.
Kashyap’s wife first received a WhatsApp call from an international number, followed by a series of threatening messages directed at him. Soon after, the complainant began receiving multiple calls and messages from various numbers, demanding Rs 40 lakh in exchange for his family’s safety.
A case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections related to extortion and criminal intimidation at the Paharganj police station.
Through sustained technical analysis, the police traced the IP address associated with the WhatsApp calls and identified the original number used by the caller. The suspect’s location was traced to Chhattarpur in South Delhi. Acting promptly, the police conducted a raid and apprehended the accused on Friday.
“During interrogation, the accused confessed to making extortion calls to the complainant, revealing that he had previously worked in the complainant’s factory at Naraina and was familiar with his personal and professional life. He cited personal debts and expenses related to his upcoming marriage as the motive behind the crime,” Nidhin Valsan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central, said.
The police also recovered two mobile phones and a laptop that were used to make the spoofed international calls and messages.
