Thousands of commuters crossing the 3-km long stretch of 100 Futa Road at Sant Shri Baba Nagpal ji (SSN) Marg — which connects Chhattarpur in South Delhi to Gurgaon — get stuck in long jams every day. In a bid to resolve the perennial issue faced by commuters travelling to Gurgaon, Indira Gandhi International Airport, Vasant Kunj, Mehrauli and nearby areas of South Delhi via this busy stretch, the Public Works Department (PWD) is now planning to build a flyover on the SSN Marg, said officials.
Officials said that the department is working on an “Integrated Transit Corridor Development Project and a street network/ connectivity plan for the corridor, along with detailed design of all intersections and mid-sections based on traffic and feasibility studies for the corridor/ network.” Under the project, the department, in the long run, has plans to construct a flyover, underpass, slip roads and footover bridge or FOB for pedestrian movement.
As per the project plan, the study also involves a cost-benefit analysis by taking into account the economic, environmental and social costs in implementing the project. “Since there is a metro line near the stretch, moving parallel to the road, the PWD will further study how to integrate the transit corridor with the metro line to avoid any structural conflict,” the project plan reads. The feasibility report has to be submitted in approximately six months to the government, following which work will be awarded.
The stretch is also surrounded by upscale residential areas, farmhouses, and shops. A senior PWD official said, “The stretch is one of arterial roads of the city that connects Delhi-NCR. But due to the mixed traffic movement, the stretch sees both slow moving vehicles and cross movements, leading to heavy congestion and traffic jams in both peak and non-peak hours.”
The official added, “The stretch also sees traffic jams during festival season as the famous Chhattarpur Mandir is in proximity…there are three back-to-back traffic signals along the Anuvrat Marg approximately 200 metres ahead of Chhatarpur Mandir intersection.”
The redevelopment of the arterial stretch has been a long-pending project of the PWD.
A few months ago, in June, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh visited the area following a request from Chhattarpur MLA Kartar Singh Tanwar. After inspecting the area, Singh directed the PWD officials to come up with a decongestion plan.
Singh had said, “A feasibility study will be done for the construction of a flyover near the main Chattarpur road. Both interventions are aimed at the larger vision of reducing traffic jams in this area…the width of the Mandi Road is 100 feet as per master plan but after a ground survey, the size was reduced to 60 feet wide following encroachments on the road side.”
“It has been a long standing demand of local residents living in Mandi Road, Chattarpur and nearby areas to decongest the area,” he had said.
