Five days after the body of a woman from Uganda was found near IMT Chowk in Manesar, police on Friday arrested a 47-year-old man in connection with a road accident that allegedly resulted in her death.
Accused Deshraj — a resident of Shimla village at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan — was allegedly driving the car that hit the woman, officers said.
The case came to light after the police on September 7 received information about an unidentified woman’s body lying on the service road near the flyover in Sector 1, close to IMT Chowk. The body was subsequently sent to the Gurgaon mortuary.
“Another Ugandan national identified the deceased as his friend. The man informed the police that she had come to India in 2023 and was working as a hairstylist at a salon in Chhatarpur, Delhi. Based on a complaint filed by him, a case related to murder was registered,” a Gurgaon Police spokesperson said.
The police, meanwhile, arrested Deshraj from Manesar.
“Investigations revealed that the woman’s death was caused by a road accident involving a car. During questioning, Deshraj admitted to driving his car, a Kia Carens, from Gurgaon towards his native village, when around 5 am, near IMT Chowk, the woman suddenly appeared in front of his car, resulting in a collision. Frightened, Deshraj then fled the scene”, the spokesperson said.
The car involved in the incident has been recovered by the police.
The body was handed over to officials appointed by the Ugandan Embassy after a post-mortem on Wednesday.
