A doctor from Egypt, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, arrested in Mumbai last month, has been sent to Tihar jail till April 19 by a Delhi court.

Hossam Abd el-Fattah Tawfiq Mohammed, 49, was arrested on March 24 from Mumbai airport on the basis of a red corner notice and a global arrest warrant. A court in Egypt had sentenced him and 528 others to life imprisonment after he was convicted of setting a police station on fire and causing the death of a colonel.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Shunali Gupta sent Mohammed to judicial custody and posted the matter for April 19 — to decide on his extradition — after his counsel sought time.

Mohammed was convicted on charges of breaking into a police station, using firearms and flammable substances, causing the death of a ‘colonel’ and deputy warden of police station and injury to a lieutenant, besides setting the place on fire.

It is also alleged that Mohammed seized weapons, ammunition and vehicles from the police station. Though the Muslim Brotherhood member had earlier been awarded a death sentence, it was commuted to life imprisonment after an intervention by the United Nations.

Granted bail by an Egyptian court, Mohammed headed to Qatar before his trial.
