The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the extension of the Metro network from HUDA City Centre till Cyber City in Gurugram, a stretch of 28.5km with 27 new stations to be built over the next four years.

The main corridor, from HUDA City Centre to Cyber City, would be 26.65km in length with 26 stations, while the “spur” or extension would be from Basai Village to Dwarka Expressway, a 1.85km stretch with one station, a government statement said. The entire 28.5km length would be elevated.

“As on date there is no metro line in Old Gurugram. The main feature of this line is to connect New Gurugram with Old Gurugram. This network will connect with Indian Railway station. In next phase, it will provide connectivity to IGI airport. This will also provide overall economic development in the area,” the statement read.

While announcing the decision at a press briefing, Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the project was an equal partnership between the Union and Haryana governments. He said around Rs. 2,700 crore of the total project cost will come from loans from international agencies.

In the statement the government said the Centre’s share would be Rs.869.19. crore, Haryana Government’s contribution would be Rs.1,432.49 crore and the local body, HUDA, would give Rs.300 crore. Loans would account for Rs.2,699.57 crore, while public private partnership schemes for constructing the lifts and escalators would give Rs.135.47 crore, it said.

The project is expected to be completed in four years of its sanction and estimated to lead to a daily ridership increase from 5.34 lakh in 2026 to 10.70 lakh in 205, the government statement said.

“Loan is being tied up with European Investment Board (EIB) and World Bank (WB),” it said, adding that 90% of the land needed was government land and the shifting of utilities had started.
