ASI red flags school for illegal construction near Humayun’s Tomb

The agency has also requested the school authorities to “immediately” stop the construction and has sought a case against the offenders.

“The school authorities have been constructing a wall. The illegally built portion also includes other constructions. The walls have been put up and a staircase has been erected, though the roof is yet to be built. The construction is abutting the ASI land,” a senior ASI official said.

According to rules, any construction or additions/alterations to an existing building within the buffer zone of a centrally protected monument is illegal.

The radius area of up to 100 metres of a protected monument is “Prohibited Area” and up to 300 metres is “Regulated Area”.

Confirming that a complaint had been received, a senior police officer at Hazrat Nizamuddin police station said police will now write to South Municipal Corporation to get the construction stopped.

“We will also register an FIR in the case under the Monuments Act. If there are grounds to believe a case needs to be registered against the school authorities, then it will be done,” the officer said.

When asked about the matter, one of the board members of New Horizon School and Samajwadi Party leader Kamal Farooqui said he was aware of the complaint.

“The school is only increasing the height of the boundary wall so that students do not bunk classes and jump over. I know about the complaint. If the municipal authorities and the ASI object to the construction, the school will stop it and comply with rules,” he said.

According to the school website, it is an unaided minority institution in Nizamuddin.
