On a day when architecture legend Charles Correa passed away in Mumbai, architects from across the country came together at the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) to mourn his death. There were many tributes by those who worked with him, and others who had been inspired by his work, calling his death “not just a loss for India, but for the entire world.
Noted civil engineer Mahinder Raj, who worked extensively with Correa, said, “My association with Charles Correa began in 1939 and he was devoted to his craft ever since I have known him. It will be hard to find another Charles Correa as he was an institution by himself.”

Architect Balbir Verma spoke of Correa’s concern for schools of architecture. “When he spoke in Goa in the month of March…his message was about schools of architecture. I still remember what he said. When schools live, the profession lives. When such schools die, the profession dies, too. The message he was giving was that schools must interact with the profession of architecture if they have to move forward,” he said.
Delhi minister Satyendra Jain said, “Charles Correa is part of our memories. It is often said that an architect is also a philosopher. We must live up to his beliefs.”
As the commemoration was held in the SPA auditorium, several architects took to the microphone and spoke fondly of Correa’s lectures and his work. One speaker said Correa’s teaching reminds people that “money is not everything to architecture”.
