The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a fresh petition seeking immediate measures to tackle the alarming levels of pollution in Delhi-NCR region, PTI reported.

The matter was brought up by lawyer R K Kapoor, who said the rise in dust particles and stubble burning in Delhi’s neighbouring states like Haryana and Punjab had led to the spike in pollution levels in NCR and its adjoining areas.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud agreed to hear the plea on Monday itself after finishing matters listed on its board.

“We cannot ignore the pollution,” the bench said, even as Delhi continued to reel under smoggy conditions on Monday as a thick haze reduced visibility to 400 metres and air quality remained at “hazardous” levels.

The fresh plea seeks direction to the Centre and the states concerned to take measures on curbing road dust and stubble burning. It also seeks effective implementation of the odd-even car rationing scheme, which was put off by the Arvind Kejriwal-led government after the National Green Tribunal asked it not to exempt women drivers and two-wheelers.
