An Air India flight from Italy’s Milan to Delhi scheduled for Friday was cancelled owing to a technical requirement on the aircraft, the airline said Saturday, adding that all affected passengers were provided accommodation and rebooked on subsequent flights.

Flight AI138 from Milan to Delhi on October 17 was cancelled due to an extended technical requirement on the aircraft scheduled to operate the flight, prioritising the safety of all passengers and crew, an Air India spokesperson said in a statement.

The airline added that passengers had been provided hotel accommodation; however, due to limited availability, rooms were arranged outside the immediate vicinity of the airport. Passengers have been rebooked on alternative flights on or after October 20, based on seat availability with Air India and other airlines,” the spokesperson said.

Among the affected travellers was a passenger whose Schengen visa was set to expire on October 20. “To ensure compliance with her visa validity, she was rebooked on another airline’s flight departing Milan on October 19,” the airline added.

The flight was originally scheduled to depart at 9 pm local time from Milan’s Malpensa Airport and arrive in Delhi at 9.30 am the following morning, according to live flight tracking website Flightradar24. The duration of a flight from Milan to Delhi is around eight and a half hours.

Air India said it continues to provide all necessary ground assistance, including meals, to those affected. “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused and reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew,” the airline said.

Flight AI138 was to be operated with a Boeing 787-8 plane, also known as Dreamliner. Airlines have seen a series of cancellations and delays of flights in the aftermath of the June 12 Air India plane crash near the Ahmedabad airport, which killed 260 people.
