Two men on a bike allegedly opened fire outside the home of Bollywood actor Disha Patani in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, in the early hours on Friday, a police officer said.
Hours after the firing, a purported social media post surfaced in which fugitive gangsters, Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara, claimed responsibility for the attack. They stated that the firing was in retaliation for an alleged “insult” directed at spiritual gurus Premanand Ji Maharaj and Anirudh Acharya Ji Maharaj by Disha’s sister, Khushboo.
The post further claimed it was a “trailer” for all Bollywood actors who insult Hindu priests or deities, warning that next time, they would be killed. Police, however, stated that they are verifying the authenticity of the post.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (Bareilly), Anurag Arya, two men on a motorcycle opened fire outside the home in the Civil Lines area around 3 am. “Immediately, the local police and a team from the Special Operations Group (SOG) reached the house and began the investigation. At least five teams have been formed to apprehend the accused,” Arya said.
“An adequate number of security personnel have been deployed at Patani’s home to ensure the safety of the family members,” he added.
Sources said Khushboo, along with her parents and other family members, lives in the house, while Disha lives in Mumbai. “At the time of the firing, the family members were asleep. The shooters fired around 10-12 rounds before fleeing,” sources said.
Khushboo, a former Major in the Indian Army, found herself at the centre of a controversy last month after she responded to a video by Anirudh Acharya ji Maharaj, where he purportedly made remarks against women.
Later, Khushboo faced trolling and received hate messages on social media. Some users misinterpreted her comment, mistakenly believing it was directed at Premanand Ji Maharaj.
In response, she had issued a clarification on Instagram and posted a video stating that her remarks were not aimed at Premanand Ji Maharaj. In the caption, she wrote: “Fake news against me! Deliberate effort to defame me! (sic)”
Following the controversy, a social media post was allegedly shared in August by the Godara gang, stating that those who insulted Premanand Ji Maharaj would face consequences soon.
Brar, alias Satinderjeet Singh, is suspected to be hiding in the US, and Godara in the UK. Both gangsters are wanted by the National Investigation Agency and many state police departments in the country.
