A week of campaigning over,Delhi University goes to polls today

Bringing an end to a week of campaigning and controversies,students from 50 Delhi University colleges and four post-graduate departments will go to polls for electing members to the Delhi University Students’ Union on Friday.

Bringing an end to a week of campaigning and controversies,students from 50 Delhi University colleges and four post-graduate departments will go to polls for electing members to the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) on Friday.

Elections will be held to the post of the president,vice-president,secretary and joint-secretary of the students’ union. Polling will take place from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm for day colleges,and from 3 pm to 7 pm for evening colleges.

Counting of votes will start at 9 am on Saturday,and the results are expected to come out by 11 am,said I Usha Rao,Chief Elections Officer for the University.

As many as 46 special observers,including deans,professors,deputy registrars and assistant registrars,will be deputed to oversee the elections on Friday,Rao said. Special security arrangements will be put in place at all colleges for the elections. Police will be deployed,and only students with valid ID cards will be allowed inside.

The University Proctor’s office has said that Chhatra Marg (from Patel Chest Institute to Law Faculty) and University Road (Gwyer Hall to St Stephens College) will remain closed on Friday and Saturday respectively.

On Thursday,electronic voting machines (EVMs) were despatched to all DUSU-affiliated colleges. This year,EVMs will have stickers with ballot numbers in Braille to facilitate voting for visually-challenged students.

Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh surveyed the arrangements for the elections. On election day,the Vice-Chancellor,Pro-Vice-Chancellor and other senior university officials will visit colleges to survey the conduct of elections.

The Vice-Chancellor will also visit Sri Venkateshwara,Shaheed Bhagat Singh and Sri Aurobindo colleges,the elections office said. Polls for appointing representatives to the University Central Council will also be held at different colleges on Friday.
