Around 9:45 pm on Tuesday, a distress call was received by the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) about a fire in a three-storey building at Mobile Market in West Dellhi’s Nangloi. By the time the fire tenders reached the site, six persons, including a teenager, had already jumped from the second floor of the building in a bid to escape the blaze.

At least three fire tenders were pressed into service. They brought the blaze under control in an hour, an official said. He further said that by the time the fire department and other rescue teams reached the spot, six persons — trapped on the second floor of the building — had jumped, resulting in injuries due to the fall.

A video clip of the incident was widely shared on social media, showing a person jumping from the burning building. The people standing on the ground floor immediately took him to the hospital.

The injured have been identified as Pranjal (19), Preeti (40), Pankaj (40); Panav (18), Vaibhav (13) and Sweta (20). Some of them also suffered burn injuries, officials said.

A police officer said all the injured have been admitted to Pushpanjali Hospital. The officer said that people resided on the first and second floors while a shop was located on the ground floor of the building.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be a gas leak in a house on the first floor of the building. However, the actual cause will be determined after the police investigation, he said.
