A horizontal beam of a four-storey under-construction residential building in Shahdara’s Jwala Nagar collapsed on Tuesday morning, trapping several people and injuring at least five, police said. The incident was reported around 11:30 am, when two calls were received at Vivek Vihar police station about a house collapse and people stuck under debris.
Police and emergency responders reached the house to find that the roof of a newly constructed hall on the third floor had given way. According to officers, the family had been carrying out construction on the upper floors when the structure caved in.
Avinish, a resident of the house, told police that the newly laid roof had collapsed suddenly, leaving workers and family members trapped. Four persons, including a woman, were pulled out and sent to a hospital. Police said the injured include two family members and two labourers engaged in the construction work.
The fifth injured person, identified as Rajesh, a tenant living in the building, sustained minor injuries, police said. They added that the area was cordoned off and further inspection of the structure is under way. Officers added the matter is being probed and that they are trying to find out if safety norms were complied with during the construction.
