A Delhi court has framed charges of extortion against a suspended Crime Branch inspector and,a sub-inspector and an assistant sub-inspector,along with an advocate for allegedly extorting money from a businessman in a murder case in 2008.

Special Judge Narottam Kaushal has charged K G Tyagi,sub-inspector Mukesh Singh and assistant sub-inspector Rajbir Singh from the Crime Branch and advocate Ravinder Chadha of extortion (Section 384 IPC).

Complaint Abhinav Aggarwal,a businessman from Old Delhi, had alleged that Tyagi had detained his father Gopal Aggarwal in a murder case and along with the other three accused had extorted nearly Rs 27 lakh to release him.

The court said prima facie it appeared that all four had conspired to demand and accept illegal gratification from Abhinav Aggarwal. The court also charged Tyagi separately under Sections 388 (extortion by putting any person in fear of accusation of an offence punishable with death or life imprisonment) and 389 (putting person in fear or accusation of offence,in order to commit extortion) of the IPC. It noted that initially Tyagi had not associated with the other accused in the crime.

SI Mukesh,ASI Rajbir and Chadha were also charged under Section 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act (taking gratification,in order,by corrupt or illegal means,to influence public servant). The court held that they had accepted or attempted to obtain bribe from the complainant as motive or reward for inducing Tyagi to forbear to do an official act,to show favour to Gopal Aggarwal.

In October 2008,Abhinav had lodged a complaint, claiming one Vijay Yadav had been murdered in Hauz Qazi area and his father Gopal Aggarwal was a suspect.
