155 grams of opium was found placed under the soles of a pair of shoes to be shipped to the US on Thursday. The incident occurred at a courier company in Udyog Vihar, Gurgaon. According to ASI Sandeep, the complainant in the FIR, was informed by the staff who found some concealment in the courier.

“When I reached the company premises, the staff said that he suspected the presence of a narcotic substance in a parcel in the company’s X-ray room. The parcel comprised a plastic bag containing grey pants, a red T-shirt, and two pairs of leather shoes, without laces. Upon checking the shoes, we found small plastic bags hidden under the shoe insoles. These plastic bags contained opium. We extracted the opium from the bags and placed it in a plastic container, sealing it securely. The weight of the seized opium was 155 grams. We put the clothes and shoes back in the plastic bag and sealed it,” he said.

The ASI further said that they collected documentation, including an invoice, an airway bill, and an Aadhaar card belonging to a Hardeep Singh, a resident of Chandigarh. The parcel was to be sent to a Gurinder Singh in the USA.

The employee who flagged the issue and informed the police said that the company staff was suspicious about a parcel and kept it aside. “When they flagged that there was a modification in the courier, the narcotics department checked it to find opium,” the staffer said, adding that such recovery was common. The company uses explosives to trace detectors and an X-ray machine to screen packages.

ASI Sandeep said that the Delhi branch would conduct checks until 2020, when Haryana narcotics bureau was formed. An FIR was registered under sections 18C-61-85 of the NDPS Act 1985.
