The unidirectional U-shaped flyover near the Indira Nagar MRTS station on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram Road) in Chennai was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday.

The flyover, constructed at a cost of Rs 18.15 crore, is aimed at decongesting the traffic.

According to a statement issued by the state highways department, vehicles tend to wait for at least 20-30 minutes at both Indira Nagar and Tidel Park junctions, leading to massive traffic congestion on Rajiv Gandhi Salai. To resolve the issue permanently, a decision was taken to construct a U-shaped flyover at both the junctions.

According to a statement by the government, Rs 108.13 crore was sanctioned for the construction of two U-shaped flyovers at the two junctions and to upgrade the transport infrastructure. Among the projects, construction work of the flyover at Indira Nagar has been completed and opened for public access.

The 237 metre-long flyover at Indira Nagar has a 120 metre-long elevated ramp on the right side and another 120-metre-long descent ramp on the left side of Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

As per officials, the initiative will allow vehicles from Sholinganallur to take a U-turn at Indira Nagar flyover and reach Thiruvanmiyur and Adyar areas via Indira Nagar without much traffic congestion.
