The Tamil Nadu Police Tuesday arrested two people, including a young woman, on charges of forcing women into prostitution, during a raid conducted at a working women’s hostel in Chennai, officials said.
The police rescued three women from the hostel and sent them to a government home.
Based on a tipoff, the Anti-Vice Squad (AVS) inspected the institution on the Egmore-Poonamallee highway and found that a brothel was functioning under the guise of a hostel.
The police arrested J Jayapradha, 19, of Puducherry, and E Premdoss, 30, of Kilpauk, who were running the racket and seized mobile phones from them. “One more person who is part of the gang is currently absconding and the police are taking all measures to nab him,” said an officer.
The accused were remanded in judicial custody.
According to the police, young women who come to Chennai from other towns and cities in search of a job were lured by the racket members, who pretended to be the agents of big companies, by promising them a high salary and flexible work timings.
The gang would then bring them to the hostel and later force them into prostitution, they said.
The Greater Chennai police had formed a special team on the directions of Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal to rein in the prostitution rackets operating in the city.
