Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) C Sylendra Babu on Monday issued a statement saying that 1,842 cases have been registered in connection with two incidents where more than 17 people died in the state after consuming spurious liquor, and 1,558 people have been arrested in the last two days.

The Tamil Nadu Police launched a state-wide crackdown after over 17 people died in two separate incidents at Ekkiyarkuppam, a small fishing hamlet in Villupuram district, and Sithamur village in Chengalpattu district after consuming illicit liquor over the weekend.

According to the DGP, the police have confiscated 19,028 litres of spurious liquor and 16,493 Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) bottles from the black market in the last two days. The police have also seized a four-wheeler and seven two-wheelers used to transport such goods, DGP Babu said, adding that 79 people involved in the selling of illicit liquor were booked under the Goondas Act.

Chief Minister M K Stalin visited the victims in one of the hospitals in Villupuram on Monday and told the media that the case will be transferred to CB-CID and stringent action would be initiated against the culprits.

Following the incidents, the government has placed Villupuram district SP N Shreenatha and Villupuram and Chengalpet DSPs (Prohibition Enforcement Wing) under suspension. Chengalpet SP Pradeep has been transferred.

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who visited the victims on Tuesday, said that there has been a rise in the sale of spurious liquor in the last two years under the DMK government. Palaniswami alleged that the government encouraged people to consume alcohol and that activists and actors have not spoken out about this incident.
