Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy Monday told the state assembly that the government would introduce video call facilities in prisons to enable the inmates to keep in touch with their friends or family and their advocates.

The minister made as many as 13 important announcements in connection with the prisons department. He said the government is planning to increase the frequency and duration of the call (audio) for the prisoners in the telephone booth facility to reduce the stress among the prisoners, make them realise their mistakes, and prevent them from committing further crimes.

The prisoners will be allowed to make a call once in three days, 10 times a month, and can speak a maximum of 12 minutes per call.

The library facility in all prisons, including central prisons, women’s prisons, special cells, will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 2 crore, the minister told the House.

The government is also planning to step up the security measures in prisons by installing 600 CCTVs with all accessories at 105 sub-jails, eight district jails and women’s jail (annex), Tirupur, and a video wall facility in nine central prisons.

To safeguard the data stored in prison headquarters, the department will be setting up a local area network and firewall to the office of prisons and correctional services headquarters.

A total of 450 digital mobile radio walkie-talkies and 15 repeaters will be procured along with all accessories at a cost of Rs 3 crore for all central prisons, minister Regupathy said.
