Locals including students protested outside the government higher secondary school at Mathur near Tiruttani in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district Friday after the padlocks of classrooms and the drinking water tank of the school were found smeared with human excreta.

The protestors were pacified after the police assured them that stringent action will be taken against the miscreants.

Speaking to indianexpress.com, an official attached to the Tiruttani police station said two students from the school were responsible for the incident.

“Initially, we received a complaint from the school stating some unknown miscreants had committed this act. We carried out an inquiry and later found that two Class 12 students of the same school had committed this act. During our inquiry Sunday, the students informed us that they were angry at a particular teacher who had asked them to be disciplined…” he said.

“Since they are juveniles, we are consulting child welfare officials and other stakeholders. We spoke to their parents as well and further inquiry is on. We have been carrying out awareness drives against drugs in all schools and other educational institutions. Now after this incident, we will be also taking measures to see how we can provide counselling to the students,” the officer added.

The police have registered a case under Sections 448 (punishment for house trespass), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), and 290 (public nuisance) of the Indian Penal Code.

Meanwhile, CPI state secretary R Mutharasan took to social media to condemn the incident. He recalled a similar incident that took place at Vengavayal last year wherein human excreta was dumped inside an overhead tank that supplied drinking water to a Dalit colony.

Mutharasan claimed that anti-socials use the school premises for illegal activities after dusk as the school has no proper compound wall. He further said that no steps were taken even after earlier protests by students seeking some basic facilities.
