The much-awaited report of Justice A Arumughaswamy commission that looked into the circumstances surrounding the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa was submitted to the Tamil Nadu government on Saturday. The state Cabinet will discuss it on August 29 for appropriate action, said the state government after receiving the report.
Headed by Justice Arumughaswamy, a former Madras HC judge, it was the former AIADMK administration that constituted the commission in November 2017. While the proceedings that heard over 150 witnesses were caught up in legal fights and several controversies, the mystery surrounding the death of Jayalalithaa was kept alive all along, including in elections. A thorough investigation into the death was one of the promises made by the ruling DMK during the last Assembly polls in April 2021. Speaking to reporters after submitting the report, Justice Arumughaswamy said the government will take a decision on releasing the 500-page report. He said that the commission had thought about everything that was important about Jayalalithaa’s death, and that this was “satisfying” for him.
The report includes two parts, including Jayalalithaa’s admission to the Apollo Hospital on September 22, 2016, for treatment, and factors such as her illness, habits and other personal details relevant to her health and illness.
When questioned about whether there were “doubts about anyone”, Justice Arumughaswamy said the report speaks the truth, refusing to comment on the findings.
“I have written less. It has lengthy depositions of witnesses… I have stated everything, answered everything,” he said.
