The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner Wednesday said the civic body will set up camps across the city in two phases from July 24 to assist women heads of eligible households to register for the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam (Women’s entitlement scheme).
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin will launch the scheme on September 15 on the birth anniversary of former chief minister and DMK founder C N Annadurai. Under the scheme, the women heads of families will get an allowance of Rs 1,000 every month.
According to GCC Commissioner J Radhakrishnan, the camps will be set up in two phases. The first phase of the camps will be held from July 24 to August 4 while the second phase will be from August 5 to 16.
He also noted that starting from Thursday, the workers attached to the Public Distribution Shops (PDS) will visit all households and issue tokens and provide application forms with details of the date and locations of the camps.
It has been noted that women should be submitting their forms only at the shop specified in their ration cards. “While visiting the camps for registration, the residents are requested to bring their Aadhaar, ration card, electricity bill and bank pass book,” an official of the GCC said.
According to the information, biometric data will be collected from the residents of all the camps. “The residents are requested to bring their mobile phone linked to their Aadhaar cards for quick registration,” the official added.
The applicants have been asked not to rush at the camps or bring any other certificate or photocopy for the registration. “The camps will be held from 9.30 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5.30 pm on all days, including Sundays,” the official said.
As per the guideline issued by the government, all women aged 21 or above or born before September 15, 2002, are eligible to register for the scheme.
Speaking to the reporters on Wednesday, Radhakrishnan said a total of 98 wards will be covered in the first phase and 102 in the second phase.
He added, “Biometric devices, connective cables and other items are kept ready to be distributed to the camps in various areas. Other departments, including police, district administration, civil supplies, cooperation and others have joined hands with us. There will be 703 personnel who will be available at help desks near these camps and further, we will have 2,607 volunteers to assist the officials. Barring the police personnel, a total of 3,473 people, including volunteers and government officials will be engaged for the smooth conduct of the camps.” Radhakrishnan said all the PDS workers are currently being trained to ensure smooth functioning.
