Tamil Nadu, Chennai News Highlights: Six people, including two women, died and several got injured on Friday morning after a government-run bus rammed into a truck at Thozhupedu near Madurantakam in Tamil Nadu’s Chengalpet district. According to the police, the bus, carrying over 40 passengers, was heading towards Chidambaram from Chennai on the Chennai-Trichy National Highway. One side of the bus was completely damaged and five passengers, including two women, died on the spot. The local police and the fire and rescue personnel were alerted and an ambulance was brought in immediately to shift the passengers to a nearby hospital. One of the passengers was declared brought dead, while many are undergoing treatment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, via the PMO’s Twitter handle, expressed his condolences. In Tamil, PM Modi wrote that he is saddened by the accident in Chengalpattu and expressed his condolences to the bereaved families. He wished the injured a speedy recovery.

A case of disproportionate assets was slapped on R Kamaraj, a former Minister during the previous AIADMK regime, by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption and searches were held on Friday in multiple locations linked to him, police said.
Kamaraj's disproportionate assets stood at Rs 58.44 crore and he has been booked for criminal conspiracy and offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, according to the FIR.(PTI)

The Special Investigation Team, inquiring the sensational Kodanad heist and murder case, on Friday questioned sand contractor O Arumugasamy.
SIT had issued summons to Arumugasamy, who is said to be close to AIADMK leadership, following which he appeared before the team at 11 AM today, police said.
The team, headed by West Zone IG R Sudhakar on Thursday held inquiry with Arumugasamy's son Senthil Kumar, based on some documents reportedly seized by Income Tax department in an apartment in Chennai in 2017, police said.

Healthcare major Kauvery Hospitals has planned to double its bed capacity over the next three years at a total outlay of over Rs 1,000 crore, a top official said on Friday.
The city-based hospital chain which commenced operations in 1999 as a 30-bed hospital now has over nine healthcare facilities comprising 1,500 beds in six cities.
"The healthcare provider is currently in the midst of a fast-paced expansion programme, as there is a plan to reach 3,000 beds by 2025 with a network of 15 hospitals spread across seven cities in South -- Tamil Nadu and Bengaluru, Karnataka, being the focus-regions with a total capex outlay of Rs 1,000-plus crore," said founder-chairman of Kauvery Hospitals Dr Chandrakumar.(PTI)

The government of Japan has conferred the 'Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star' award on Sanmar Group Vice Chairman Narayanan Kumar in recognition of his contribution towards strengthening economic relations between Japan and India.
At an event held here, Kumar was honoured by Consul General of Japan in Chennai, Taga Masayuki, an official release said on Friday.
Kumar also heads Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He had served the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as its president and was among the 'Spring 2022 Imperial Decorations recipients', the release said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday offered his condolence to the kin of victims who were killed after a bus rammed into a lorry in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu Friday.
"Pained by the loss of lives due to an accident in Chengalpattu. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon," he tweeted.

A user named Abubacker, a functionary of Naam Thamizhar Party, on July 6 posted an image of a dish and captioned it as ‘beef curry’. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has registered a disproportionate assets case against former Tamil Nadu minister for food and civil supplies R Kamaraj (62). He has been accused of acquiring assets worth Rs 58.44 crore, disproportionate to his known sources of income. Searches are underway at 49 premises linked to the AIADMK leader as well as his family members in and around Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirapalli, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur. Read more
The first bench of the Madras High Court was informed on Thursday that the Tamil Nadu government had given instructions to all higher officials and the heads of departments to comply with court orders promptly or to prefer appeals well in time, to avoid contempt proceedings. A GO dated July 6, issued by State Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu, was produced before the bench of Chief Justice M N Bhandari and Justice N Mala.
About two days ago, while dealing with another case, the bench had indicted the government for not implementing its orders. The non-implementation ultimately resulted in initiating contempt proceedings and the court passing strictures or imposing costs, the bench had bemoaned. (PTI)
An 18-year-old student in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district ended his life on Wednesday, allegedly after he found the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) too hard and difficult to score marks in.
According to the police, the boy, G Murali Krishna, completed Class 12 in 2021 and had been preparing for NEET since failing in his previous attempt. He was found dead in his room by his parents, Gopi and Mohanasundari, who broke open its door as he had not come out after a long time. He had just had lunch with his parents at their home in Arasanatti village near Hosur. Read more
The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has announced that power will be suspended in parts of Chennai today in T Nagar, Mylapore, Tambaram, Guindy, KK Nagar, Avadi, Ambattur, Ponneri, Perambur, IT Corridor, Adyar for carrying out maintenance work in the city. Parts of Chennai will face a power shutdown from 9 am to 2 pm, with supply expected to resume before 2 pm if the work is completed.
