A 26-year-old man was arrested in Chennai on Tuesday for allegedly entering houses in the area and harassing women who were alone at home at the time. Residents also alleged that the man had sexually abused some of the women at knife-point, the police said.
The Selaiyur police identified the accused as Tamizh Prabhu, a cab driver, and said that he was arrested under Section 354 (outraging modesty of women) of the Indian Penal Code and The Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. Prabhu was later remanded to judicial custody.
According to the police, residents of MES Street, Murugan Street and Veerabathiran Street near Irumbuliyur in Tambaram had lodged a complaint saying that in the past few days, a man had been spotted spying on houses in the area at odd hours. They alleged that he entered houses where women were seen staying alone.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and began analysing CCTV footage. The police spotted a man jumping the wall of a household and fleeing the spot. The police formed a special team and also informed some people to be on the alert to nab the accused.
On Tuesday morning, residents noticed the man moving around the Irumbuliyur area, caught him, assaulted him and then handed him over to the police.
