AIADMK MLAs were evicted from the Tamil Nadu legislative Assembly Wednesday after they raised a matter of seat allocation before the Speaker.
The party’s general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami Wednesday brought the issue to the notice of Speaker M Appavu. He quoted the court ruling and said the party has been requesting the Speaker to effect a change of seat for the party’s deputy floor leader.
After expelling O Panneerselvam (OPS) from the AIADMK, the party named former minister R B Udhayakumar as the party’s deputy floor leader in 2022. But still, OPS continued to be allocated seating next to Edappadi, where according to the AIADMK, the deputy floor leader should be seated as per the Assembly norms.
In the Assembly Wednesday, Edappadi also raised their demand to disqualify OPS, P H Manoj Pandian and R Vaithilingam from the House as they were expelled from the AIADMK party.
As the MLAs on the OPS and the AIADMK sides began to indulge in a war of words, the Speaker intervened and noted that the Assembly has been run as per the Constitution and the decision over allocation of members’ seating rested with him. As the arguments continued in the hall, the Speaker ordered for the eviction of the AIADMK members.
The AIADMK MLAs led by Edappadi, raised slogans against the ruling government as they came out. While speaking to the reporters, Edappadi said they had provided letters on 10 previous occasions requesting to consider their demand but no action was necessitated by the Speaker.
EPS claimed that democracy is not followed in the Assembly and accused the Speaker of not intervening and providing answers to the question raised by the Opposition towards the ministers.
He noted that the division bench of the Madras High Court has approved the decision taken by the AIADMK of expelling three members and they have produced all the files related to it to the Speaker but yet there was no action initiated.
“We are asking for our rights and nothing else. Since they are not able to fulfill our demand, they are rejecting it by coming up with some reasons,” EPS said.
OPS on the other hand told reporters that the Speaker has been acting as per the Assembly norms.
