Young nurse dies by suicide in Mohali, family alleges harassment by husband and in-laws

Priyanka’s father, Surinder, a resident of Agroa village in Hisar district, Haryana, told the police that his daughter married Akash in February 2023. According to Surinder, shortly after the wedding, Priyanka’s husband Akash’s extramarital affairs caused frequent conflicts in their household, leading to emotional distress for Priyanka.

The father further claimed that Akash’s family pressured them into funding his move abroad and demanded Rs 12 lakh for the purpose. However, Akash never went abroad despite taking the money and allegedly continued to harass Priyanka. The woman’s family also accused him of being an alcoholic, and physically abusive toward Priyanka.

According to Priyanka’s father, on March 13 at around 10 pm, Priyanka’s mother-in-law, Babli, called Priyanka’s maternal uncle, stating that Priyanka had locked herself inside a room and was not responding to calls. When the family arrived in Mohali, they discovered that Priyanka’s body had already been placed in the hospital mortuary.

As per the Mohali police, Priyanka’s body was handed over to her family following a post-mortem examination at Civil Hospital, Phase 6, Mohali.

The police have registered a case under Section 108 (abetting suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Akash, his mother Babli, and other family members.
