Highlighting the gravity of the case pertaining to alleged illegal properties owned by various powerful individuals in the periphery of Chandigarh,the Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the Punjab government to respond on why the case should not be handed over to a Special Tribunal for probe. A division bench comprising Justice M M Kumar and Justice R N Raina asked Punjab Advocate General Ashok Aggarwal to seek instructions from the government authorities as to why the probe shall not be handed over to a Special Court headed by a retired Judge.
The Advocate General has been given a week time to respond. The Bench reiterated its observation that the case in question is equivalent to the infamous 2G spectrum case. The development took place during the resumed hearing of a petition arising out of a suo motu cognizance taken by Justice Ranjit Singh on the issue of alleged illegal properties owned by powerful individuals in the periphery of the city beautiful.
The Punjab government today also filed its status report on the investigation carried out by its Special Investigation Team (SIT). Newsline was the first to report on Monday that discrepancies in the list of properties furnished by as many as 115 officers of the Punjab government have surfaced.
Punjab Chief Secretary S C Agrawal today filed an affidavit giving complete details. In its voluminous status report,the State today submitted that 36 IAS,17 PCS,4 IPS,38 PPS,4 IFS,6 IRS,2 IA & AS,4 excise and taxation commission,3 doctors,1 civil,total 115 officers (information of these officers was received during the inquiry regarding their properties in the Capital Periphery area however these officers did not make mention of these properties in the proforma supplied to them and to their Administrative Departments in the property return).
