Himachal Pradesh’s former ADGP has defended his decision to take VRS from the police service to contest the Bihar Assembly elections after he lost the Chapra Assembly constituency and ended up forfeiting his deposit. He maintained that loss and victory are part of the game.
Jai Prakash Singh, a 2000-batch IPS officer, was promoted to ADGP from the rank of Inspector General on January 31, 2025. In an attempt for political breakthrough, he opted for voluntary retirement five months later in July — two years ahead of his scheduled retirement on July 31, 2027. The ex-ADGP is a resident of Ward Number-8 Teghra in Saran district, Bihar.

With a ticket from Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), Singh contested from the Chapra Assembly seat. Chapra went to poll during the first phase of assembly elections in Bihar.

On his decision to join politics after taking VRS from the police service, Singh said, “…I was commissioned in the Indian Army. I started preparing for the civil services after resigning from the post of Major in the army… I never regret my decisions whatever these lay ahead.”
Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Chhoti Kumari won the Chapra Assembly seat securing 86,845 votes. Shatrughan Yadav, the RJD candidate, was second with 79,245 votes and independent candidate Rakhi Gupta stood third with 11,488 votes.

According to the poll affidavit of Jai Prakash Singh submitted to the election commission, the value of his individual movable property is approximately Rs 2.18 crore and immovable property is worth around Rs 2.72 crore.
