More than two years after his retirement from Himachal Pradesh University, veteran journalist and former journalism professor Vepa Rao is set to return to the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication here.

The executive council of the university, which met here on Sunday, approved the appointment according to the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) norms pertaining to re-employment of retired teachers. Rao can, however, retain the job only till he attains 65 years of age, which means he will have less than a year to serve the HPU.

The name of Rao,who had played a significant role in establishing the department and later in the placements of more than 200 graduates and post-graduates in leading media organisations of the country, was earlier recommended by a panel of experts set up by Vice-Chancellor Prof Sunil Gupta.

The meeting, which was presided over by Gupta, also approved promotions of non-teaching staff — an architect,a deputy registrar, three assistant registrars, six section officers, one senior private secretary, one special assistant to V-C and an assistant librarian from the due dates.

The council approved the proposal to introduce entrance test for the students intending to get enrollments for their PhD. The decision will be effective from the current academic session. The council also approved UGC Regulations-2009 for affiliation of different colleges/institutes in the state.
