Vasundhara,Aadil win all-India inter school golf championship

When two of the best known junior golfers from Chandigarh is taking part in a tournament together,one can expect them to return with flying colours. That was what happended when Vasundhara Thiara and Aadil Bedi- two of the leading junior golfers from city- emerged winners in the 3rd Albatross inter school golf championship that concluded at ITC Classic Golf Club in Gurgaon on Friday.

The stage set for them was far from ideal. The conditions were wet and humid which made matters further complicated for them. However,overcoming all the obstacles and other talented golfers from various schools of India,the duo came up with stellar performances to clinch the titles.

Whereas Vasundhara,a student of Vivek High School,Sector 38,won the Category D title by a big margin of 11 strokes,Aadil was also impressive as he clinched the Category C title in the championship in which golfers from 15 school teams were taking part,including favourites like Doon School,Modern School and Mayo College.

Both the golfers enjoyed a purple patch on the Classic Golf Club course and returned with a collective two-day score of 307. Vasundhara shot 79 and 80 to garner 159 in two days. What set her apart from other golfers was her consistency which she had been working on with her coach Jesse Grewal.

She impressed everyone by registering six birdies and had 14 pars on the Canyon course. She was the leader in her category on both the days and even outscored boys in her category to clinch the title.

Aadil,on the other hand,shot 77 and 71 (1 under) to return with a total of 148,which included 26 pars and three birdies,in two days. After an average first day,where he finished sixth,he made a stunning comeback and registered three birdies. He even shot the best round of 1 under that fetched him the title. Together,they helped the school team win the championship title.

Both Vasundhara and Aadil are leading in the IGU merit list in category C and D respectively. Aadil won three matches and finished second and third respectively in the other two,whereas Vasundhara won all the four matches that she played.

These players have proved their mettle not only at the domestic circuit but also left a mark on the international circuit as well. Vasundhara finished third in the US Kids European Championship held in Scotland in May earlie this year. She shot 85,73 and 71 in the championship. She also finished 17th in the world cup held at Pinehurst,USA,by shooting 76,73 and 82.

Aadil,who participated in the World Junior Masters last month,had finished sixth as he shot 77,73 and 73 in the championship. He was impressive in the world cup held at Pinehurst in USA where he finished 21st out of 160 golfers from all over the world. He shot 74,72 and 70 in the championship.

Both practice at CGA Golf Range in Chandigarh and are being coached by Jesse Grewal and sports psychologist Irina Singh
