‘Varsity suppressing democratic rights’

Himachal Pradesh University Vice-Chancellor Prof ADN Vajpayee and the varsity administration were at the receiving end at the public colloquium on Sunday after left-wing students bodies and state CPM leader Tikender Singh Panwar accused the university authorities of suppressing the democratic rights of students.

Even after elections for the students’ Central Association (SCA) were held, the newly formed body has not been invited to assume office or take oath. “ It’s only because they belong to a particular organisation (SFI ). This is a clear suppression of the democratic rights and vice-chancellor,who has a controversial past at Madhya Pradesh, should not test the patience of students’”,said Vikram,a SFI leader.

A moment later,a university teacher stood up from the audience and posed a question to the Chief Justice. “ What should be done in the present situation. Is it not violation of fundamental rights of elected representatives ?”

Tikender Singh Panwar – who had been a student leader 15 years ago said,“ The university has been painted as the most violence prone university while it is one of most peaceful in the country. This time the university has decided to ignore a mass mandate and has not invited the SCA body to take charge. Is it because that it belongs to the SFI. Where should they go to seek justice or should not they organise protests for their rights?”.
