The operations cell of the UT Police has summoned nearly a hundred persons — owners of at least three types of cars — as part of investigations in cases of tyre thefts in the city. A special investigation team (SIT) has been formed in the operations cell to probe all car tyre theft cases.
As many as 34 such cases —wherein tyres of high-end cars are stolen by miscreants leaving the car standing on bricks or flower pots – were marked to the operations cell of the UT Police by the Inspector General, last month. The cases were registered from January 2014 till June this year.

Police sources said they had identified three types of cars that the suspects are using for stealing the tyres. Most of these have ample space to accommodate the tyres while escaping. CCTV footage in some of the cases has been procured, in which the faces of the suspects are clearly visible, apart from the make of vehicles they used.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Amarjit Singh Cheema said, “To find a pattern in these cases, such as place, time and modus operandi, the cases have been consolidated and given to operations cell.”
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Operations Satbir Singh said the statements of the complainants and witnesses had yielded some clues to the police.
