Amid heavy rainfall on Wednesday morning, a tragic incident unfolded in Sector 4 of Panchkula when a massive tree collapsed on a car parked outside a private school. The vehicle was carrying six schoolchildren, four of whom sustained injuries and were rushed to a private hospital for treatment.
Anand Atri, a local transporter, shared that his brother Anoop had gone to drop off the children at the school when the tree suddenly fell on the car. Inside were six children — two each of Anand, Anoop, and their sister. All were en route to school despite severe weather conditions.
Earlier on Wednesday, Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Monika Gupta issued a directive to close all government and private schools, including Anganwadi centres, due to heavy rainfall. She had also urged students, parents, and teachers to remain indoors for safety.
“Despite these warnings, some private schools continued to insist on student attendance, raising serious concerns about accountability and the prioritisation of children’s safety during extreme weather events,” a parent said.
