The butterfly, for young graphic designer S Ayyappa, symbolises many things. Its colour, fragility and flight stand for freedom and knowledge. So,when Ayyappa decided to apply his skills for a Queer film festivals poster competition,he realised that, through the simple motif of a butterfly,he could say a lot.
For fashion designer Wendell Rodricks, who was asked to judge the poster competition for the 3rd Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, the choices were plenty from across the country but he preferred Ayyappas poster for its simplicity. Announcing the winner on Tuesday,Rodricks said,The winning poster raced ahead of the others due to the creative nature of translating the butterfly motif without resorting to the butterfly icon that is already a part of the festivals logo. That apart, the message is conveyed with clarity, minimalism and dignity, three characteristics that I personally cherish.
Ayyappa, who is studying visual communication at Andhra Loyala College in Vijayawada,is ecstatic that his work will now be featured on hoardings, print and online advertisements,as well as catalogue covers, banners, and cinema slides. This is the first national competition that I have participated in,and this award will help me move forward on my way to a career in design, he said.
The third edition of Indias only mainstream Queer film festival will be held on May 23-27 at Cinemax Versova and Alliance Française de Bombay,Mumbai. Festival director Sridhar Rangayan said,The theme for this years festival is For Everyone, which means it has something on offer for everyone, and not just the LGBT community. The contest has achieved what it set out to focus not only on the metros but also to queer persons in Tier-II and III cities across India. That the winner is from Vijayawada underscores our reach in the last two years.
