Representatives of 21 residents’ associations from the TDI area in Mohali Sunday met local MLA Kulwant Singh and handed over a memorandum demanding that their locality be brought within the limits of the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC).

The association members pointed out that the 2021 government notification had included the entire TDI area under the municipal corporation, raising hopes that their civic issues would finally be addressed. However, in the latest delimitation notification, the small TDI zone has been completely excluded, a move that residents say has come as a major shock to thousands of families.

The association leaders warned that if their demand is not accepted and the TDI area is not incorporated into the municipal corporation, they will launch an agitation from October 29.

The MLA heard the delegation and assured them that he would take up the issue with the Chief Minister and the Local Government Minister. “I will make every possible effort to ensure the area is included within the municipal limits,” he said.

However, the MLA also made it clear that if the area comes under the MC, property tax will apply from day one, and residents will also have to continue paying the monthly maintenance fee to the builder until the corporation formally takes over the area. “People should not later accuse the authorities of imposing extra taxes,” he remarked, adding that development works can begin only after the official handover from the builder to the MC.

The residents, however, said they are willing to pay both taxes. “We are ready to pay property tax and even the builder’s maintenance fee, but our priority is to bring the area under the municipal corporation,” said one of the representatives, adding that residents have long suffered due to the builder’s negligence despite repeated complaints and protests. “At least under the MC, an elected representative will be accountable, and development will finally begin.”

The MLA assured the delegation that he would hold discussions with top officials and, if required, accompany the association members to present their case for a permanent resolution of the issue.
