The Punjab Police Monday claimed to have detained four persons who allegedly provided logistical support to two others to carry out a Rocket Propelled Grenade attack at a police station in Tarn Taran on December 9, a senior official said. The two suspects who carried out the attack remain at large.
The RPG was fired at the Sarhali police station in Tarn Taran on Friday night, the fifth such attack on a security establishment in the state in the last 13 months. In the latest attack, the projectile hit a Saanjh Kendra adjoining the police station on the Amritsar-Bathinda highway. There was no casualty but window panes and a portion of the wall of the building were damaged.
Briefing the media, Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill said four suspects who provided logistic support and motor cycles, in the RPG attack have been detained.
“The process to identify two people who executed the act is going on. I cannot disclose any name at this stage,” he
said.
Gill said in one or two days, police will disclose more facts, including names of the people who were behind the attack. He said the investigation was being conducted under the supervision of Additional Director General of Police (Internal Security) R N Dhoke while ADGP (Counter Intelligence) Amit Prasad was camping in Amritsar.
Prima facie, police have got all the clues of this incident, he said, adding that the crime has been cracked. Further investigation is underway, he said.
Replying to a question, Gill said the security of all police buildings, including police stations, has been strengthened.
DGP Gaurav Yadav, who had visited the Tarn Taran atack site, had said that it was military-grade hardware which was suspected to have been smuggled from across the border. “There is a clear indication that it is a strategy of the neighbouring nation to bleed India by a thousand cuts,” the DGP had said.
On Sunday, the station house officer of the Sarhali police station Parkash Singh was transferred to the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) wing. SHO of Patti police station Sukhbir Singh has been posted as the SHO of Sarhali police station.
An FIR under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been registered in connection with the incident.
