In response to the rising water levels in the Tangri River, Haryana Energy, Transport, and Labour Minister Anil Vij Friday placed the administration on high alert and ordered immediate evacuation efforts in Ambala Cantonment and surrounding low-lying areas. Vij represents the Ambala Cantonment Assembly seat.
On Friday morning, the Tangri River swelled to alarming levels with a reported inflow of over 30,000 cusecs, taking the water level well above the danger mark. Vij, accompanied by district officials and BJP leaders, conducted an on-ground inspection and directed the district administration to begin immediate public announcements urging residents along the riverbanks to shift to safer locations. For the Tangri River, 15,400 cusecs is considered the danger level.
“Due to heavy rainfall in the hills, the Tangri River has seen a sharp surge in water levels. Though we had started deepening the riverbed before the monsoon, only 25 per cent of the dredging work could be completed. The rest will be taken up post-monsoon,” Vij said.
To manage the potential flood-like situation, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Ambala Cantonment. Rescue boats have also been arranged to assist in emergency evacuations. Vij emphasised that “every effort is being made to ensure public safety”.
During his inspection, Vij stood on the Tangri River bridge to monitor the flow and received updates from the Irrigation Department on current and projected water levels. He instructed the Irrigation Department, police, municipal council, and other agencies to maintain close coordination and ensure that announcements are regularly made in vulnerable areas.
Vij also visited several colonies situated along both banks of the Tangri River. His inspection route included Matidas Nagar, Golden Park, Babyal, Rampur, Sarsehri, Prabhu Prem Puram, Kardhan, Nangal, and Mahesh Nagar Pump House.
