Blaming the previous Congress government for the states poor financial health,Punjabs Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal claimed credit for having improved the situation to some extent during the SAD-BJP regime.
Sukhbir said as the previous regime had left the states coffers empty for the new government,adding that the Congress did not generate much revenue,which hampered development of the state. He claimed that while the excise revenue of Punjab grew by only Rs 180 crore during the five years of Congress rule,adding that the growth was only Rs 1,500 crore when SAD came to power in 2007. in contrast,he said,the figure jumped to Rs 3,000 crore during the SAD-BJP regime. The deputy CM said the excise revenue would grow to Rs 4,000 crore by next year. The deputy CM was speaking at a function at the native village of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. He said the Congress was now trying to divert the attention of the people by raising the issue of debt trap.
With obvious reference to his cousin and ousted Finance Minister Manpreet Badal,Sukhbir said,We have not done any backstabbing,but some among us have done so and are now talking the Congress language.
