Speculation over Faridkot voter turnout

Faridkot constituency has always maintained a high voter turnout.

Faridkot constituency has always maintained a high voter turnout. But the question is will it be able to sustain it.

The people are starting to pick up the enthusiasm which had been missing till now, after the first phase of poling in Punjab. The highest voter turnout in this constituency was 70.39 per cent in 1977 when Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal contested from here. While the lowest was 25.72 per cent in 1991 when Jagmeet Brar of the Congress won the elections. There are still doubts over the turnout this time as Leftist Jagroop Singh says,”The constituency had the highest turnout when Sukhbir Singh Badal used to contest from here. It would be a surprise if it crosses the 50 per cent mark.”

Another Left leader Pawanpreet Singh says,“People of Faridkot have been let down by the Akalis. With Sukhbir Badal shifting to Bathinda, the loyalties shifted too.” The Congress workers, however, disagree. Sukhinder Singh of the UCPI,who have announced their support to the Congress, explains,“After the Bathinda polls, the urban votes will increase. Secondly, since the Akalis did not allow many people to vote in the ZP and Panchayat elections, they will use these elections for payback. So a good rural voter turnout is expected.”
