The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is mulling the option of booking community centres through e-sampark centres. The aim is to decentralise the process and facilitate the booking procedure for residents. At present, the booking has to be done at the office of the Municipal Corporation in Sector 17.
The proposal had been part of the recommendations made by a committee headed by Brig K S Chandpuri (Retd). The committee had visited all community centres in the city in order to ascertain the changes that were needed. The report was presented in the House Meet of the civic body.
The councillors felt that the process of booking through e-sampark centres should be started.
Most of the residents visit the office of the civic body in order to find out whether the community centre is available on a particular date or not.
Thereafter they make another round just to book the place. Having the facility at the e-sampark centres would ensure that they do not have to go far, said Brig Chandpuri.
It was also stated that since e-sampark centres have come up in many sectors it would be convenient for the residents. In villages also gram sampark centres are present.
It was decided that the matter would be taken up with the UT Administration. At present there are a number of services that are being provided at the sampark centres including payment of bills, etc.
The other recommendations made by the committee include letting governing bodies manage community centres. The governing bodies can could make their own rules keeping in mind the requirements of the residents. The functioning be reviewed by the civic body after one year if need arises.
The committee also recommended that gambling should not be allowed.
The rates for booking should remain the same as earlier. However, cleanliness charges should be deposited along with security deposits.
There was a division among the councillors over whether to allow marriages to take place at the community centres.
While a section wants that marriages should be banned at the community centres the others feel that there should not be any restriction as it is one of the most affordable places to hold ceremonies.
