Sex determination tests: Thirty convicted in Haryana

Thirty persons,including 25 doctors have so far been convicted in Haryana for violating various provisions of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act.

Thirty persons,including 25 doctors have so far been convicted in Haryana for violating various provisions of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) Act. Around 327 ultrasound centres have also had their registration cancelled or suspended in this regard and 177 ultrasound machines have been seized by the respective district authority.

Haryana Health Minister,Rao Narender Singh while replying to a question by Sampat Singh during the question hour said 70 prosecution complaints against the violators of the various provisions of the PNDT Act-1994 and Rules,1996 have been filed in the respective courts. A task force has also been constituted at the district level with the deputy commissioner as Chairman for strict implementation of the PNDT Act. The health minister said the first three court cases under the PNDT Act were in Faridabad district and these were the first of their kind in the country.

He also informed the House that the government has registered 1,251 ultrasound clinics or genetic clinics and 67 genetic counselling centres under the PNDT Act,out of which 50 are in the government sector.

As many as 13,798 inspections of various ultrasound clinics have so far been conducted.

Rao also said that as part of efforts to improve the sex ratio in 2011,the best performing villages in 17 districts had been awarded with a cash prize of Rs one lakh each and a prize of Rs five lakh will be awarded to the best village in the entire state.

The state has also decided to offer a reward,of up to Rs 20,000,for those who inform the health department of illegal activities like sex selection and female foeticide.
