The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police on Thursday arrested the second absconder,Som Pal,who had jumped parole while serving a life sentence after being held guilty in the gangrape of a German national. In all three convicts had jumped parole,out of which one was arrested in October this year and the third convict is absconding.
Five convicts Harpreet Singh,Manvir Singh,Sukhvinder Singh,Pankaj Kumar and Som Pal were sentenced to life on January 28,2009. Thereafter,three convicts Harpreet Singh,Sukhvinder Singh and Som Pal were released on parole but did not return within the stipulated time period.
On October 4,police announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for providing information about the absconding convicts. The next day,the Crime Branch arrested convict Harpreet Singh at a barricade near Sector 42/43/52/53 roundabout.
Som Pal was on Thursday spotted near the Sector 17 bus stand around 12.30 pm and was immediately arrested. Later,he was produced before a local court and was sent to judicial custody. Pal,a resident of Ambala,was released on 28 days parole from Central Jail,Faridkot on August 28. However,he did not report to the jail on due date – September 25.
