The Haryana government on Thursday claimed that it had been able to succeed in reducing the dropout rate in government schools by around 90 per cent in the last seven years.
While attributing the success to the semester system, grading system in evaluation and scholarship schemes introduced by the government, figures maintained by the education department show that in 2004-05,while the schools were witnessing a dropout rate of around 12.7 per cent in Class I to V,the figure was 24.5 per cent for students between Classes VI and VIII. However, the same has now been reduced to 1.3 per cent (Classes I to V) and 3.7 per cent (Classes VII to VIII).
The figures added that around two lakh students study in government schools across the state, who are also given scholarships. While the scholarship amount is Rs 150 for girl students, boys get Rs 100 per month when they are admitted in Class I.
When the Congress government took over, the dropout rate in government schools was quite high. However, because of the introduction of various schemes and our awareness programmes,we have managed to bring the dropout rate down by 80 to 90 per cent, which is quite an achievement, an education board official said.
