Rights body approaches court against prison chief

Claiming that the DGP Shashi Kant was ‘shielding’ those involved in trafficking drugs into the state’s prisons, the Anti-corruption Federation of India has approached a local court seeking directions for an FIR to be lodged against the DGP.

Claiming that the DGP (prisons) Shashi Kant was ‘shielding’ those involved in trafficking drugs into the state’s prisons, the Anti-corruption Federation of India has approached a local court seeking directions for an FIR to be lodged against the DGP. Razaudin Saifi, general secretary of the federation filed the case before the Ludhiana Chief Judicial Magistrate Musneesh Arora. The case will be heard on March 7.

Earlier, the members of the federation held a day-long fast and protest at Ludhiana’s Jagraon bridge against the officer. Neeraj Chawla the president of the body said: “ The DGP has claimed openly that he knows about the big fish involved in trafficking drugs into the jails of Punjab but cannot name them. Had this statement been made by an ordinary person the police would have arrested him, lodged an FIR against him but no one is taking any action against the DGP”.

Chawla said that the DGP’s attitude has raised question marks on the working of the Punjab Police. “By not naming the persons, the DGP is helping them carry on their illegal business. And by doing so,he is also committing a crime and hence should be booked. The DGP has even admitted publically that there is proof against these persons and every one in the force knows about them. These statements raise a huge question mark on the working of the Punjab police and also that of the DGP himself,” Chawla added.
