A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 24/7 water supply, residents in Manimajra were dismayed to find their water supply interrupted, dirty, or completely unavailable on Monday evening.
Sonu Mehra, a resident of Pipliwala town in Manimajra, expressed his frustration: “Only yesterday, when Amit Shah was here, the water supply was fine. It was clean and not dirty at all. But by the evening, the problems started. The supply was reduced and dirty.”
He added, “Today, we received muddy water. Forget about a 24/7 supply; we just need clean water.”
Kunal, another Pipliwala resident, voiced similar concerns: “We were told that we wouldn’t need water purifiers anymore, but the water is contaminated even for routine chores.”
“Yesterday, they made grand claims about the pilot project in Manimajra, saying the water would be clean and pure. Now, the water is so dirty we can’t even wash our hands. Who knows, it might be sewage mixed with drinking water,” Kunal added.
Chief Engineer NP Sharma responded, “We haven’t received any complaints from Manimajra.”
He explained, “During full pressure supply, a zone end cap opened up due to pressure, allowing some muddy water into the pipeline. This issue was immediately rectified, and scouring was done. Now there is no problem.”
On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 24/7 water supply project on a pilot basis in Manimajra.
A senior officer elaborated on Manimajra’s infrastructure issues: “We have replaced 22 km of severely damaged pipelines, constructed two underground reservoirs of 2 million gallons each, installed VFD pumps, and 11,500 meters. However, some households still need to connect to the new pipelines for full-pressure 24/7 water supply.”
He added, “Until all households are connected to the new pipelines, we can’t stop using the old ones. Now that the major infrastructure is in place, the stabilization phase will begin. Manimajra is divided into four zones, and stabilizing each zone will take 5 to 7 days. This includes ensuring all households switch to the new pipelines, starting the pumps, and moderating water pressure.”
