Sutlej River Tuesday breached its Dhussi bandh at two places, causing significant damage to the embankment in the Shahkot area of Punjab’s Jalandhar district, as flood waters inundated the surrounding areas which were mainly agricultural land.
According to officials, the first breach took place at Gatta Mandi and Kaso villages at around 12.40 am and the second one at around 2 am on July 11.
Vishesh Sarangal, Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar, said they have already filled sandbags and a rescue operation is underway in these villages.
The water of the Sutlej is gushing inside the villages as the breach is increasing because of the huge inflow. According to the Drainage Department officials, the earlier breach was around 25 feet wide and now its width is increasing.
The Sutlej is carrying around 2.50 lakh cusec of water currently, including that from the release of Ropar headworks on Sunday. It had reached the Shahkot area at midnight.
People have been working to strengthen the bandh at several places under the leadership of environmentalist and Rajya Sabha member Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal for the past two days.
Seechewal had raised the issue of extraction of sand during a meeting held in Chandigarh regarding flood preparedness. However, the work started late and the required amount of sand could not be extracted.
