A Nihang Sikh Thursday allegedly killed his 16-year-old daughter, tied her body to his motorbike and dragged it through his village of Muchhal in Punjab’s Amritsar district — after she left home for just a day without telling her parents.

According to police, the accused, a labourer, left his daughter’s body at a railway crossing, some 500 metres from his house, and fled the spot. He is still at large, said police, adding that they have registered a murder case.

“The accused confined his family members at home and threatened to kill them as well. Due to fear, they couldn’t leave the house. The police are conducting a search operation to arrest the accused,” a police official told The Indian Express.

The accused man’s father said his granddaughter had left home on Wednesday. “We had searched for her but couldn’t find her. When she came back today (Thursday) afternoon, her father questioned her. She didn’t say anything.”

According to the police FIR, the accused assaulted his daughter physically before using sharp weapons, killing her.

Police said the man has five children, including four daughters. The deceased was his third child.

Police have taken possession of the victim’s body. They said she had studied up to class 12 before dropping out.

Balbir Singh, a village resident, claimed, “The accused is known for losing his cool. He would often beat up his children and wife over small issues. His wife told me that he got angry after the girl returned after remaining missing. He attacked his daughter with a sharp-edged weapon and killed her.”
