Opposition parties on Sunday slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for its flood management situation that has worsened the plight of several of the affected people.
Highlighting the situation in Kharar, Kurali, Nayagaon, and villages in Majri block, Mohali, senior BJP leader and Punjab state media head Vineet Joshi said on Saturday that “floods in Punjab may partly be nature’s wrath, but Kharar’s misery is entirely due to the incompetence, negligence, and corruption of the AAP government”.
Waterlogging has crippled major roads including Kharar-Landran Road, Nijjar Road, and Shivalik City stretch. In many colonies, water stagnates for weeks. Kurali’s Nagar Khera Chowk, Fawwara Chowk, Mata Rani Chowk, and main bazaar remain submerged, while Nayagaon’s Nadda, Karoran, Kansal and others turn into rivers even after light showers.
Villages across Majri block Mirzapur, Abhipur, Gochar, Tarapur, Khizrabad, Thana Gobindgarh, Sangatpura, Palanpur, Kartarpur, Tida, Sayalba Majri, Nagliyan are plagued by pothole-ridden roads and incomplete bridges. Link roads from Jayanti Majri to Guda Kasauli, Karoran to Tanda-Tandi, and Eco City in New Chandigarh are in disrepair.
Joshi demanded the Punjab government “immediately provide relief and restore basic amenities like electricity, water, and roads.”
“AAP government’s negligence has turned Kharar into hell,” Joshi declared.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also hit out at the Punjab, accusing it of abandoning flood victims at a time of devastation.
“Floods have wreaked havoc, but the government has turned its back on its responsibilities,” SAD spokesperson Shamsher Purkhalvi said.
He recalled that just months ago, Irrigation Minister Dr Varinder Kumar Goel assured the Assembly that monsoon rains would cause no damage. “Today, hundreds of villages are submerged, crops destroyed, livestock lost, and even the Army has been called in for relief,” he added.
Targeting Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the spokesperson said: “Punjab is today surviving only on God’s mercy. There is no sign of the government on the ground. People are pleading on social media, but instead of standing with the victims, the Chief Minister is missing.”
Purkhalvi highlighted that SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal himself visited flood-hit areas in Ferozepur, Tarn Taran, and Sultanpur Lodhi, delivering essentials such as pumps, generators, and JCB machines. The party has already distributed 30,000 litres of diesel among farmers and laborers to repair embankments and operate tractors and trolleys. In addition, rations, medicines, and shelter facilities are being provided through gurdwaras.
The Akali Dal has also cancelled its scheduled “Fateh Rally” on August 31, instructing party workers to focus entirely on relief operations.
Demanding compensation, Purkhalvi urged the government to immediately grant Rs lakh per acre to affected farmers. “Even in past floods, compensation was promised but never delivered,” he said.
“The people’s greatest hope now rests with the Akali Dal and the SGPC, because we always stand by them in crises, while this government only makes promises and betrays,” the spokesperson added.
