PU student outfits slam fee hike, will hold protests

The students’ outfits on the Panjab University (PU) campus have strongly condemned the Syndicate’s decision to hike fees for first-year students from the next academic session.

The students’ outfits on the Panjab University (PU) campus have strongly condemned the Syndicate’s decision to hike fees for first-year students from the next academic session. Party leaders have already planned to hold massive protests, against the decision,in the coming week.

The University Syndicate,in its meeting held on June 29,accepted the report of a fee committee with minor changes. The House approved the proposal to effect the fee hike from the coming academic sessions for first-year students only. As per the decision,PU has increased by 10 per cent, the fee for first year students of general courses and 20 percent for professional courses.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline, national delegate,National Students Union of India (NSUI),Barinder Dhillion said: “We totally criticize the decision of the Syndicate. We failed to understand as to why hiking fee is the last resort for the authorities to increase their funds. They can work on austerity drives.” He further added that NSUI will not sit and watch this act of the varsity but will seek a logic explanation from the authorities.

It is learnt that during meetings of the fee committee, the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council president,Satinder Satti had submitted his dissent regarding the proposal of fee hike.

Slamming the varsity authorities,Students Federation of India (SFI) president Prabhpreet said: “We fail to understand that the Vice-Chancellor have funds in lakhs to spend on the renovation of his house. He has spend over Rs 3 lakh on his kitchen. PU has money to spend on Ministers who visit the varsity, but to maintain their funds they resort to hiking the fee.”

The students leaders held that already students pursuing self-financed courses pays fees in lakhs. This decision of the varsity will do nothing but mount a financial burden on the students and their parents, they added.
